Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

In this module i have greatly developed my paper engineering skills and applied them to a major part of the brief. I think i used these skills very effectively and used them to communicate the main element of our design. I think this was effective as i think what we did would be something O2 would consider doing as a real advertising campaign.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

When generating work and solutions to problems for this brief, at the beginning we made 3d models of leaflets and experimented with origami as 3d sketches, then we thumb nailed ideas and tested leaflet and poster formats on both the computer and by hand. I think we used a good range of experimentation and appropriate ways to test and resolve ideas. For example, when testing poster ideas it was easier to rearrange imagery on the computer over the O2 gradient and quicker to to see what did and didn't work.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I think my strengths in this brief were my paper engineering skills and this is something i would like to take further in my other design work. I would capitalise on this by experimenting more with different subjects and methods as well as researching more about it. Hopefully i will get a chance to develop my skills in this area on another brief.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

I feel my weaknesses in this brief were layout design and i feel i need to improve on this in other areas of my design work too. I could exploit this more by focusing on a brief soley to do with layout so i can develop my skills in this area as it is something i would like to improve.


5. Identify five things that you would do different and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. I would research paper engineering more to develop a wider range of designs to utilise.
2. I would look at more layout designs as to improve my own skills
3. I would create more work faster to have a range of ideas to pick from.
4. I would try other ideas for a concept instead of just sticking with one and exploring only that.
5. I would organise my time more efficiently to get more done in the time available.

Finished and sent!

Well today we finished mounting the boards and had them checked to be sent. They were fine and they have been sent now along with the rest! I can't wait to see what will happen next.

Do the O2

This advert for O2 focuses on music at the O2 and proves that it doesn't advertise the other facilities and amenities as much. The advert does use something that isn't an "O" for the O2 and uses the actual arena for the "O" as it is spinning around on a giant record. I think this is quite interesting as i think our idea stands out, like this one, but fits in with what O2 do and believe.

New website

I thought this was something quite interesting to mention, while doing this brief for O2, and being a customer myself, i have been checking the website quite frequently and have seen the changes to the website. It seems more friendly and easy to navigate. The old website looked quite corporate but this new website looks more approachable and relaxed. It seems more user friendly and not all about selling you a contract or a phone.

Poster development





Poster and leaflet choices

When taking photographs for the posters using origami we had created, we decided that the posters that used an origami piece to represent a letter of the O2 venue was more effective than just an image of the origami on the poster. Also with the leaflet we had to redesign its purpose to make it more interactive with customers and make them want to hold onto it or use it for their benefit. We did this by making the leaflet a suitable size to fold down into an origami piece that would make up one section from the giant paper O2 ball we created and then they would take it into store to either make up and connect to others, thereby redeeming an O2 surprise, or by having a member of staff help build it up and insert it if it is too difficult for the customer (and the customer would still get the surprise). To change all the leaflet and to finish the posters in time, we delegated jobs and i created the posters while Jane created the leaflet.

Lighting studio photographs/Final Models

The following images are what i have created for my sections of the O2 arena's venues. This image is for the club "matter" in the O2 arena. I wanted to create something angular, modular (built together) and triangular as this echos their design of their logo and imagery used on their section of the O2 website.



This image is for the "IndigO2" section of the O2 arena. This music venue is a more opulent and extravagant venue so i thought something like these delicate origami lillies connected together would represent the feel of IndigO2. I thought flowers would do this quite well as lillies are usually a more extravagant and expensive flower as well as giving quite an opulent look also the connection between them represents O2's slogan of "we're better, connected"



This image is where the main concept for our idea came from. We created a kusudama to represent the "O" of the O2. This is the image we will use for the main poster for the campaign of "we're better, connected"

Zoe Bradley

I cant remember where i found this amazing women but i love all her work with pleats, folds and paper structures! I think her main interests are in fashion and that is what a lot of her portfolio is based on but the thinking behind it and the techniques used are something i would like to develop as skills of my own. I love the simplicity of her designs and how you can really see the structure and feel of the paper. I think this is inspiring as it shows there can be a commercial purpose for paper folding and origami.

Indigo2 @ the O2

For this poster i will be creating something to represent the more opulent feel that it portrays. It is a music venue that stars more refined acts for a certain type of audience. I will have to show this opulence and grandeur in my work to truly get the feel of Indigo2 across. Below is their current logo.

Matter @ the O2

This venue is a more vibrant young feel to it and it is a purpose built place strictly for music. With their current logo, i think it would be really interesting challenge to create some form of origami for it as it is a geometric design which lends itself to origami quite well. This is my favourite logo from the O2 arena group and i can't wait to start experimenting!







Vue @ the O2

For the cinema experience that is Vue, i plan to create a Kirigami piece as i can't think of anything or anyway (at the moment) to represent cinema in origami. Kirigami is another Japanese art form that is based on paper cutting. I would like to create a film reel or a negative of a film that is ripped or separated so they slogan "we're better, connected" would work quite well. I would like to create a kirigami piece that could maybe slot together so the phrase is highlighted. Below is their current logo.

Posters

After the crit, we decided that creating imagery for 6 posters would be enough work to take on in the time remaining so we will be not producing leaflets anymore. We will be creating promotional posters to go in O2 stores that inform people about what goes on at the O2 arena.

Crit

After the little surprise mini crit today, we received feedback about our concept and products. It was mentioned that while the concept was strong (having the modular origami pieces connect to make a whole piece to represent the O2 slogan of "we're better, connected") we still needed to think about the details of our products.
We have decided to separate the main organisations that provide events and entertainment at The O2 Arena between the both of us and we will create an origami piece for each organisation. We will then use these origami modules to create promotional posters that will go in O2 stores to inform people about what is available at The O2. I will be producing imagery for the club matter, the music venue Indigo2 and the vue cinema. When i mentioned the leaflets, people thought it would be a good idea to make the leaflets useful for the arena, so having something like a floor plan/seating plan or how to get to the arena would be a good idea.

Crit

After this first crit we came away with quite good answers as to where we should be moving with the project.
People mentioned that it would be a good idea if our point of sale leaflet had tariff information in it as they found these confusing and would like them to be made simple. They said that when they thought O2, they thought bubbles and blue, and these were the most prominent elements about O2. While experimenting with paper we tried out an idea of a card holder for your top up card but the group were in agreement with each other and said that people no longer use top up cards that frequently and it would become a useless item, so we have decided to not progress with it further. We asked people what they thought O2 didn't promote enough and everybody said The O2 Arena. I agree, as i have never really known what goes on there or what its about, so this will be the focus of our project using origami imagery.

Leaflet format considerations.

While experimenting with paper for a leaflet format we these two models stood out as being interesting ways to present information. The first is just an origami pattern that can be transformed into an octagon shape and the second is a traditional Japanese money envelope.

Kusudama

As our idea is focused on origami and we are wanting to create pieces that are relevant to O2, we thought this paper Kusudama (lit translated as medicine ball) could be used to represent the O of O2. This is only a prototype so the colours used are not what we would use for the final piece but the shape is relatively the same. I think it would look really professional in white crisp lightweight card.

This advert was specifically designed to be aired for Valentines day and i think it is a good way to illustrate the slogan "we're better, connected"

O2 interview...

...well Lambie Nairn, the company who redesigned O2. This section of the interview from Computer Projects magazine shows a quote which mentions how Lambie Nairn thought about consumers, i thought was quite an interesting way to think about consumers and this is probably why O2 seem quite a popular and friendly company.

O as object

After looking at Lambie Nairns website, i can see that they have created something to represent the "O" of the O2 instead of the traditional typography, several times and they have been quite experimental with what they use. I think this will work in our favour for our concept.

O2 Spinning top arena.

This image is of the O2 arena and i am going to represent it using origami. I will try to to show the shape of the dome and the columns that stick out.



...I created an origami spinning top out of seven sheets of paper connected, to represent the actual O2 arena. I will just need to insert the columns of the arena that stick out.

Collaboration - O2, We're better connected !

For the YCN briefs i have chosen to collaborate with Jane as we both have a vision of creating something large scale and paper based. We are both interested in origami, paper engineering, paper cutting and the other potentials of paper. We have chosen to focus on the O2 brief and have decided to portray the phrase "were better connected" using origami to promote the brands offers and services using in store posters and a memorable point of sale leaflet with O2 info in. We thought origami would fit with the phrase "were better connected" as we wanted to create a large scale modular origami piece, which would need connecting together to see the final result. We thought this could be a good opportunity to get people involved and connect with each other. We will focus on the colours of O2 being blues/blacks/whites and will incorporate their ethos of being fresh, positive and simple. While reading the brief i highlighted a few certain phrases that i thought were integral to the brief having a solid outcome....

"...from movies, music and games, to football, rugby and facebook"

"If our brand was a colour it would be blue but the blue of a beautiful sky on a summers day"

"...visual metaphor for O2, you could use oxygen bubbles"

"..natural, fresh, positive, simple."

and finally the most important of all - "we're better, connected"
